Sequential Fiction is all about The Forest City Comicon this week, there’s a big announcement, a beer of the week, Brian and Liam’s Comic Picks of the week, and our first guest interview, this week with John Houghton of the Forest City Comicon.

Brian and Liam’s Comic Picks of the week.

Writers of the Future

Liam went a bit off road this week with his selection “Writers of the Future”, the most recent edition which closes September 30th.   The Writer’s of the Future is an award and annual volume which is based off an endowment that L. Ron Hubbard left for the organization.

From the site:

“A culture is as rich and capable of surviving as it has imaginative artists.” — L. Ron Hubbard

Thus began a talent search for the best creative imaginations in the world—the storytellers, the artists, the entertainers, the visionaries. Two contests that changed the future of science fiction and fantasy:

L. Ron Hubbard presents Writers of the Future and Illustrators of the Future.

Each year, twelve writers and twelve illustrators are selected by a panel of the biggest-name authors and the biggest-name artists in the field. They will be the stars of tomorrow.

Brian’s Beer of the Week:

Forked River Weendigo
Forked River Weendigo

This week Brian was enjoying a Forked River Weendigo, which is a Bourbon Barrel-aged Imperial Stout, that is aged for nearly six months in Jack Daniels’ bourbon barrels. It’s a 10.2% ABV stout, and Brian bottle aged it a further nine months in his cellar so it was extra delicious!

Brian’s Comic Pick of the Week:

George Perez's Sirens Pen and Ink

From Boom Studios, it’s an “artist’s edition”, but instead of being a massive $125 behemoth, this is a $15.00 single issue printed on 11×17″ paper so that you can see all of the details that Perez is famous for.

George Perez is one of my all time favourite artists. His art on The New Teen Titans is my favourite comics of all time. Judas Contract is my favourite comic arc ever, and it’s largely because of what Perez contributed to the canon.

Sirens is George Perez’ first original title in over a decade, and this is a great look at his artistic skills.  Read more about it in this preview from Comic Book Resources.

The Forest City Comicon will be held Sunday, October 18th in London Ontario from 10am – 6pm. The show promises to be bigger and better than their first year, with a full takeover of the 50,000 square foot London Convention Centre in downtown London.

I had a chance to speak about the show with John Houghton, who is the media relations co-ordinator for the Forest City Comicon.

Brian’s Big Announcement:

I’m really excited that the “SuperPanel” that John mentioned during the interview will be moderated by…ME! The panel’s name will officially be “The ABC’s of Comics”, and will feature Andy Belanger, Brian Lee O’Malley, and Chip Zdarsky. It’s at 2pm in the big auditorium.
